Street Elite is the exciting new category created for modified car owners and builders to compete with the current styling and build trends. It will reward current styles and encourage future trends and grow with the whole custom automotive industry. Meguiar's Superstars covers the Super Elite builds and Street Elite will cover this fast growing category catering to the majority of the custom car industry.
The most significant change with car building over the last few years is that owners want to show their cars and be competitive but still use them regularly. Therefore with good planning and preparation of the build and focus on cleaning and maintenance after completion this can be achieved. People are still looking for elite finish on engine bay, body, paint, interior but much more usable undercarriage. Therefore with the undercarriage the judges will be looking for well executed legal engineering, innovative coatings without the high level of smoothing and detail associated with Super Elite Showcars in the engineering and concept, planning and innovation awards.
All Street Elite entries will have to have current registration where an annual inspection is compulsory, blue slip or engineers report (for new vehicle) to be eligible for judging. Street Elite is designed for the owners and builders who genuinely want to compete in this category and cars will be expected to be presented in the spirit of the competition it is designed for. The 5 classes are:
• Hot Rod (Pre '48)
• Street Machine/Muscle Car ('48 to current)
• Tuner (Post '86 Japanese)
• Custom Euro (Customised BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari’s etc)
• Custom Cruiser (Heavily body customized cars built for cruising. Majority will be 50’s and 60’s vehicles)
There is provision to add further categories as the custom industry progresses and develops.
JUDGING & CRITERIA FOR CARS
Judging will be in line with Summernats, Powercruise, Autofest series, South Coast nationals and the majority of other national shows giving owners and builders clear guidelines to follow.
Initially there will be:
Bodywork
Here the judges will be assessing the straightness of body, including lines, panel gaps and fit, moulds, Bumper bars, lights, glass, overall workmanship and degree of difficulty.
Paintwork
This could be standard or special effect paint work. Our experienced team will be looking right through to the base of the paint at the metal and primer preparation, laydown and sanding of the primers, topcoats and any artwork. The overall finish and degree of difficulty in the finish will also weigh heavily on the result of paintwork.
Interior
There are unlimited amount of products of finishes included with interiors, again our team will be looking for innovative materials and processes used for interiors. Fit, finish and practability will be rewarded in this category
Engine Bay
As with previous categories, engine and engine bay the team will be looking for finish, detail but also included here will be legality. The clever use of under bonnet performance items and innovative legal engineering will be rewarded.
Engineering
There will be engineering rewarded in engine bay and concept, planning and innovation but there is still the need for a separate engineering award due to the importance and thought involved to make a custom car legal and drivable.
Impact & Display
As with Meguiar’s Superstars we are looking for entrants to make an overall impact with judges and the public who pay money to come these events. The vehicle should be displayed for the public to see the features easily and accessible for the judges to do their work.
Design & Execution
This is the newest area not previously rewarded and where your project should start. Vehicles that are planned and executed properly using innovation and finished off well will be rewarded in Street Elite. The judging team will be looking for concept drawings, innovative ideas, the use of legal engineering, clever finishes that will be easy to maintain and a vehicle that will flow, obviously from concept and good planning. We understand that you can be flexible during the build but a vehicle doesn’t usually flow with huge changes and added ideas during the build. The clever use of products like underbody sealers, satin or flat paints, custom fitted or smooth panels where dirt and road grime can’t lodge, this all fits the maintenance, drivability and road use for Street Elite.
JUDGING CLASSIFICATION
Judging is also important for the entrants that build these vehicles. With the introduction of Meguiar’s Superstars we have seen the level of judging raised and much more discussion and transparency with the introduction of only automotive industry judges and meetings with entrants, builders and judges. We have also included meetings, seminars and asked entrants to supply build books and information prior to the Superstars final for pre assessment of the vehicle.
With Street Elite Showcase judging we will still use the most experienced auto industry judging team which will include a mentoring team to new judges. These recruits will come from custom car builders and approved people from the industry. By using this method we will always have fresh experienced judges keeping up with the current trends. Judging and classifying cars at shows has always been a contentious issue, with these issues addressed we are confident all entrants will feel fairly treated and understand the system fully even if they don’t win.
Judging point’s allocation for each category are:
Body work - 150
Paintwork - 150
Interior - 150
Engine Bay - 150
Engineering - 150
Impact and Display – 125
